Piston check valves are essential for controlling fluid flow in various industrial applications. They belong to the check valve family, which permits only unidirectional flow in a system.
Like other check valves, a piston check valve has a mechanism to keep the disc in the seating position. This is usually a spring, but it could be any other mechanism that provides a force contrary to fluid flow. One key attribute of piston check valves is a guide, which prevents misalignment of the piston as it opens and closes. The following diagram highlights the basic components of a piston check valve.

- Gland packings can be replaced without removing the valve from the pipeline land packings can be replaced without removing the valve from the pipeline.
- Lift check valves can be used in horizontal as well as vertical pipelines.
- Utilizes a piston that moves linearly to open or close the valve. Moreover, the valve seat is either flat or conical.
- Delivers a tighter seal because of the large surface area of the piston and seat.
- Prevents backflow of oil, gas, and other fluids in pipelines, offshore platforms, and refineries.
- Prevents backflow in steam, cooling, and fuel systems to protect turbines and compressors.
- Prevents backflow in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to protect pumps and valves.
- Prevents backflow of dangerous chemicals or corrosive fluids to protect the system and environment.
- Prevents contamination from backflow in processing lines to maintain hygiene and product safety.
